Observation Narrative
A somewhat unusual, remnant maritime forest that is possibly transitional to non-maritime upland forest. The site is located on a low, almost imperceptible sand ridge near the southern end of the Eastern Shore. Some parts of the ridge were cleared in the past and now support decadent forests of Pinus taeda and P. virginiana. The plot is located in an older part of the stand which may have been cleared long ago but has succeeded to largely deciduous forest. The presence of Quercus rubra and Q. alba is atypical of maritime forests in this region, although Quercus falcata, Carya pallida, Ilex vomitoria, and Ilex opaca are all present and characteristic.
